An African American (also Black American) is a person in the United States whose ancestors, usually in predominant part, were indigenous to Sub-Saharan Africa. However the average African American is estimated to have about 17% European ancestry.[1] It is also estimated that a signifigant number of African Americans have Asian and Native American heritage. In the United States the term is generally used for Americans with predominantly Sub-Saharan African ancestry.
